GETTING TO KNOW

Michael Chance

PAINTER

LONDON, ENGLAND

b. 1987

Practice

Michael Chance describes his  work as ‘a kind of coded autobiography;’ seeking out a way to create visual metaphors, whilst avoiding the direct or the given. Through his paintings, you will find an exploration of both the personal and the political. Each work a celebration of blurred boundaries and an invitation to explore paradoxically playful layers, where there is an evident search to find a hybrid between the representational and the abstract.

The process that Chance employs to create is considered and thought out. Whilst he may work on an idea over the course of several months, the finished painting often emerges at a specific point in time. It is a process that uses meticulous preparation, allowing for the final work to be produced intuitively. For recent works, he has used paper sculptures as a way to rethink the space that a painting can contain. Developing drawings based on these small sculptures, to then inspire the ideas that later become paintings.

‘From a certain distance we may appear as monumental, singular and whole

but looking more closely we see other realities.’

As Chance explains, we can see this notion reflected in his paintings. Each work does make sense as a whole, however within this, there are many layers of multiplicity and perhaps confusion. Some of his most recent work aims to create the presence of a sculptural object, whilst playfully defying limits should it ever, if it ever could, be created beyond the canvas.

His work is closely linked to poetry and draws on observed reality, memories, history and imagination. Recurring motifs and objects appear, from human and animal bodies, to books, knives, plants and shards of glass, evoking to the artist a feeling of an archaeological dig. His practice draws inspiration from the likes of Pablo Picasso, Dana Schultz, Georg Baselitz and Marcus Lupertz.

Background

Michael Chance is a painter based in London. He lives on a narrowboat and has a studio space in Hackney Wick, where he dedicates most of his time. Chance graduated from the Royal Drawing School postgraduate programme in 2012, where he has since continued to work as a part-time tutor and technician. Between 2014-18 he co-founded and managed Mercer Chance Gallery based in Hoxton; that showcased emerging artists with a focus on drawing and painting. His own paintings have been acquired in permanent collections such as The Royal Collection and Sir Michael Moritz Estate, Italy.

Chance grew up in Bedford with a keen interest in music. He studied Popular Music & Communication at Liverpool University. In 2013 he released an album through Tombed Visions Records titled ‘Moving’; demonstrating an alternate medium in which to express autobiographical themes. Whilst painting is the artist’s dedicated medium of choice, music is still incorporated into his working process, whether that be to inspire and influence, reflect an alternate expression of the visual, or as a finished product in its own right.
