INTRODUCING

Ali Rose Mary

DIGITAL PAINTER

AYR, SCOTLAND

b. 1977

The work of Ali Rose Mary (“Ali Rose”) has, until very recently, been a near entirely private practice. From behind closed doors, out of public sight, Ali Rose has worked to cultivate and explore her creative work. Painting has always been a constant, alongside other life commitments. From studying an MA in Theology and Religion, to work as a Digital Archivist and motherhood. You are unlikely to easily locate a wealth of information about her artistic practice through internet searches. Where, shielded behind a chosen moniker, her portfolio has until recently been presented solely on a newly launched (2020) social media channel.

Practice

Ali Rose Mary is an assured and practiced hand when it comes to working with oil paint on canvas. However, with the dawn of innovations in digital drawing technologies, Ali Rose has also embraced the less charted medium of the tablet and digital pencil for all its convenience and accessibility. Whichever materials are used, Ali Rose has a committed technique and process that she has used since a child. Taking influence from Outsider and Naïve Art, Ali Rose strives to approach the blank canvas without judgment. Seeking to express unplanned, intuitive, and unselfconscious mark-making. Despite the abstraction in many of her works, each piece is personal and linked to a narrative in the artists’ own subconsciousness. Where recurring totems appear, such as a mark across the face of depicted figures.

Ali Rose is an atheist however experienced a childhood brought up in Catholicism. This early influence and an interest in religious iconography and art, predated her further study in this field. It is therefore little wonder that such themes permeate the journeys of Ali Rose's pieces.

When it comes to colour, her work is an explosion of the spectrum. Particularly so in the digital pieces, where colours marry or discord against each other with certain unpredictability.
